Early restoration of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal in Saddleworth (1)

canal index | next page>
The photographs on these pages, taken in 1981 and 1982, show some of the early restoration work. Two lock chambers and a half mile section of the canal were restored by volunteers from the Huddersfield Canal Society.
Twelve miles to the west of Huddersfield is the flight of locks between Dobcross and Diggle in Saddleworth. This milestone is situated alongside lock 26W.

A hundred yards further. The sorry state of lock 25W. This is typical of the treatment applied to the locks, presumably to reduce maintenance costs and to make them safe.

Cascade at Limekiln lock (23W).

Excavation of the first two locks, 22W and 23W commenced in 1981. The picture shows Dungebooth lock (22W) being excavated by volunteers using picks and shovels, a simple winch and a wheelbarrow or two.

Dungebooth lock (22W): Refurbishing the spillway.

Dungebooth lock: Excavation complete, new lock gates awaited.
