Recent restoration of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal in Saddleworth: The locks

canal index | next page>
The photographs on these pages, taken between 1999 and 2001, show some of the recent restoration work.

If anyone needed convincing that this work is worthwhile then these two pictures should do the trick. This is the scene at Wool Road (lock 24W) at an early stage (1999).

This picture taken in May 2000 shows the restoration work almost complete.

Excavation at Wade lock (21W) at the other end of Uppermill early in 2000 soon reveals the original stone arch of the bridge.

A later photograph showing the shuttering in place to support the reconstruction of the arch. The lock chamber has been cleared and the side walls are being repaired.
