Simple clinometer to measure pitch angle in panorama shots

The simple device shown here, made from a 180º protractor and a pocket spirit level allows accurate measurement of the angle of elevation (or pitch). This is particularly useful when making a panorama by stitching many frames. If you put the correct value of pitch angle into PT Assembler (when asked to "set reference point") converging verticals will be corrected and a good straight panoramic image will be produced.

This close-up shows the edge of the protractor under the pocket clip. This provides friction and a convenient pointer.

In this example the back of the camera makes an angle of 80º with the horizontal, indicating a pitch angle of +10º
