A Virtual Trip through the Standedge Tunnel

canal index | next page>

Along with boat owners, foot passengers are carried in the cabin of the electric tug. I went through from Diggle portal to Tunnel End, Marsden in April, 2002.

Photographs were taken on Fuji colour film, all those in the tunnel using flash. Some of the negatives were a bit thin and required some "pushing" in the digital processing.

The pilot (the man at the front). This is some way into the tunnel. I had been too busy listening to the commentary to take photographs.

The man at the back. The narrow boat, just one on this occasion, is somewhere behind. In this area the tunnel has been lined with concrete sprayed on to steel mesh to prevent rock falling.

Looking ahead. A section of tunnel without lining. Rock bolts are used where considered necessary.
